Sonya Sharp

Sonya Sharp is a proud lifelong Calgarian who has passionately served the community for 24 years. She embodies the spirit of Calgary as a previous business owner, dedicated public servant, wife, mom to two teenage boys, and daughter of immigrant business owners. After learning first-hand the challenges and resilience needed to run a business in Calgary, Sonya began her City Hall career in 2005 to enact change from within.

Over 16 years, she worked in both the Planning Department and the City Mangers Office, championed local businesses as the Leader of the Business and Local Economy team, and served as the City Manager’s delegate on Council’s Business Advisory Committee. After a successful municipal campaign in 2021, Sonya had the honour of serving as City of Calgary Ward 1 Councillor until 2025. As a Council Member and Mayoral Candidate, Sonya spearheaded the development, evaluation, and approval of new policies, legislation, and initiatives focused on public safety, promoting economic development and local businesses. She developed, evaluated, and approved municipal policies, bylaws and a $4.5B+ annual operating budget while balancing fiscal responsibility with public benefit. Now she is combining her civic leadership and entrepreneurship as a non-partisan consultant specializing in strategic municipal and intergovernmental advocacy, communications and stakeholder engagement. Utilizing her experience in business, government relations and leadership, she is focused on partnering with key stakeholders, cross-functional teams, and all levels of government to generate consensus and execute meaningful strategies. Sonya’s track record of pulling people together to roll up their sleeves and work to find solutions to pressing issues is evident through her time as Chair of the Event Centre

Committee where she received unanimous Council approval for the $1.3B Scotia Place Event Centre. Rooted in integrity and community-centred leadership, Sonya Sharp’s consultancy is built around extensive expertise, strong relationships, and demonstrated success managing the political landscape to achieve positive policy outcomes.
